Rancho Bernardo is a community in the northern part of San Diego, California. When we talk about education in this part of the country, it should be noted that all the schools in this area are a part of Poway Unified School District. If we want to focus exclusively on Rancho Bernardo, it has a total of nine schools, seven of them primary and two secondary ones. This article is going to deal with a list of Rancho Bernardo schools, with the special focus on Rancho Bernardo High School. Elementary schools are: Creekside, Highland Ranch, Shoal Creek, Turtleback, Westwood, Chaparral, and Painted Rock. Among them, Westwood is the one with the best reviews and students’ experiences, so it rightfully enjoys the best reputation of them all. When it comes to the secondary schools, there are Bernardo Heights Middle School and the central item of this article, Rancho Bernardo High School. If compared with the rest of the schools in this state, its quality is above average in almost every field – some of them being the number of advanced courses per student, the treatment and service of disadvantaged students, college readiness measures and successfully done state tests. Taking into account that only the average of three percent doesn’t graduate from high school, and that seventy percent of students performs well enough to enroll the University of California and California State University, meeting all the necessary requirements, this school would probably be a good choice for your kids and their friends provided they have academic aspirations. It is also important to note that this school is the third safest one in the San Diego county based on violence and drug rates. It is pretty ethnically diverse, with white still being the dominant race with fifty-three percent.
The school takes particular pride in its Science Olympiad helmed by the enthusiastic physics/chemistry teacher, Yvone Eibeck, who organizes about ninety students into six teams. They regularly attend the Division C San Diego Regional competition, where they have been extremely successful for many years which brought them regular participation in the state competition. Aside from fantastic academic results, they also have a lot of success when it comes to sports. The school teams’ nickname is “The Broncos”, and over the years, they even gave some recognizable names, like the MLB first-rounders, Danny Putnam and Cole Hamels. The famous school marching band called The Royal Regiment should also be mentioned.
Even though there are some conflicting opinions and comments from parents about this school on different websites and locations, ranging from the claims it is one of the best high schools in the United States of America in general, to the angry rants that their teachers harass the students, they are unkind, unprofessional and full of unresolved personal issues. The truth is, as usual, somewhere in between. However, based on the available facts that can be checked (and many of them are mentioned here), Rancho Bernardo High School firmly stands its ground as one of the most successful schools (at least) in this part of the country. You can say what you want about the teachers at RBHS, but most of them is dedicated to their jobs and want to see their students achieve the best possible results. That is, ultimately, the purpose of a committed teacher.
